“Arthur
was a wonderful character, a top personality who performed miracles with his
work on fostering the athletes he did in New Zealand firstly and then throughout
the world with his visits and his books. He certainly had a great
influence in my transition from a club to an international standard competitor.
Best wishes for your work with the Foundation. Arthur deserved the best.”
–Ron Clarke
One of the greatest middle and long distance
runners of all time. During his celebrated athletic career between 1963
and 1970, he set 18 world records between the distance of 2 miles and One-Hour
Run (first man to go beyond 20,000m in an hour). He was the first man to
break 28 minutes in 10,000m, smashing the old record by 36 seconds (27min.
39.4sec.), and the first man to break 13 minutes for 3 miles (12min. 52.4 sec.).
He won the bronze medal in 10,000m in 1964 Tokyo Olympics behind Billy Mills in
what is known as “the Biggest Upset in Olympic History”; and missed out the
medal in 1968 Olympics at high altitude of Mexico City. He currently serves as
Mayor of the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
